City University London
Ingrid, July 2012Overall score
I am very satisfied with this course! I chose City University because of its good reputation abroad - as I am an overseas student from Norway, and because of the course modules offered in GPE. I will recommend this course to students who have a political background or have studied within this field, and want to get a deeper insight in GPE.
Study experience
Over ten weeks of lectures, we had 50 minutes of lecture followed by 1 hour of class discussions per week. This gave me a good learning experience, as I find discussions and interactions the best way to really understand GPE. The course material consisted of both old and new articles, easily found online through the Uni database. For each module, we handed in essay for assessment at the end of the term. We were given the opportunity to chose topic and problem statement for ourselves, and the support and help from the faculty was very good, as the institute operates with an open door-policy. I funded my course by taking up a student loan.
Facilities
The social science building is rather new, and the class rooms were perfect for lectures and discussion groups. The library has an especially good collection of different e-resources, such as journals, in addition to a wide collection of books. Facilities for IT, printing etc. are good, and reading spaces are located on two floors. Post-graduate students have access to a brand new learning centre, perfect for reading and writing located close to the library.
Postgraduate life
City University is located in the centre of London - perfect for postgraduate life as the university is close to several bars and restaurants. There is a wide range of clubs, sports and other activities to join at the university. On the course, we were international students from all over the world, hanging out not only at uni but meeting up for drinks, dinner, dancing etc. every week.
Job prospects
The postgraduate course has given me a more specific education than just political science, which makes my opportunities for a job good. I am applying for jobs back in Norway, while still writing my dissertation.
