Course Summary

Overview

Ready to take on more responsibility in your nursing role? Develop your critical thinking, expand your knowledge of evidence-based practice and become more confident in carrying out research in a clinical setting. As a nurse you’re always developing your clinical practice. But as someone who’s leading change, you need to support this with high-quality research and the latest thinking. On this programme you’ll learn how to support your role with clinical research. Our expert academics will guide you as you develop a research question. You’ll work independently on your project, aiming to make a difference to patients and other nurses. Note: Applicants must have been awarded a Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) in Nursing with Registration (all fields) with an overall average mark of 55% or above (or overseas equivalent) to apply for this course.

Course detail

To join this course you need a Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing undertaken with registration as an Adult, Children’s or Mental Health nurse. You’ll study part-time while continuing to work in your clinical role. The dissertation is the only module on this course. It is an opportunity to carry out research that’s directly related to the clinical work you do or a wider service provision you’re involved with. You can develop your own research question, or your tutor can help you decide on a suitable project.

Teaching and assessment

The study time and assessment methods detailed above are typical and give you a good indication of what to expect. However, they may change if the course module changes. This course is designed for nurses who want to move into more advanced roles with greater responsibility. It encourages you to use research – your own and that carried out by others – to support your approach to your practice. Your PG Diploma will have given you the confidence to take an evidence-based approach to the care you deliver. Now you can take this one step further, developing research skills and putting them to use in a major project.

Career prospects

A completed MSc will indicate to actual and potential employers that you have the abilities and characteristics required of nurses working in more advanced positions. As such, some graduates move on to more senior nursing roles, while others pursue a clinical-academic career.

Entry requirements

Applicants must have been awarded a Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) in Nursing with Registration (all fields) with an overall average mark of 55% or above (or overseas equivalent). Applicants are also required to have studied research methods at a postgraduate level. If you do not meet the normal entry requirements or you have only the minimum academic standard you should pay particular attention in preparing your supporting statement and CV to ensure that you draw attention to evidence of potential success for dissertation work. This might include publications, preparation of reports or active participation in service development initiatives or funded research. All applicants will be required to submit a brief outline of their project ideas.
