Postgraduate Social Anthropology reviews

Anthro at Edinburgh

Social Anthropology Ma (Hons)

University Of Edinburgh

Alexander, August 2007

Overall score

Graduated this year and hugely enjoyed my university experience. Well-organised course, with some unusual course options, taught by some of the best known academics in the field.Possibly the only course which offers a practical element, where students conduct their own fieldwork and then write a 15,000 word thesis-this was a fantastic experience as it really is at the heart of the discipline.Highly recommended!

Study experience

Lecturers are varied but generally excellent.

Facilities

Library a bit outdated but is being refurbished.

Postgraduate life

Once again cannot really comment

Job prospects

Have no expereince

Disorganised Uni, disrupts capable lecturers

Social Anthropology MA

University Of Wales, Lampeter

Ross, February 2010

Overall score

I came to Lampeter 5 years ago to do my BA in Archaeology and Anthropology. At the time the uni was fantastic, there was a vibrant, positive feel to the university, with great course delivery. However, since then, a combination of bad publicity, poor SU appointments and a thoroughly disorganised admin department has left the Uni barely clinging on for survival. Major cut backs in the summer of 2009 have left the uni with a skeleton crew of staff and an air of doom hanging over the place. What used to be great student-staff ratios doesn't exist any more, and the more than fantastic time and devotion that the lecturers had for students isn't the same. Though, this is not the fault of the lecturers, as they are now bogged down doing admin work and trying to reorganise the chaos that cut backs have caused. The focus has now turned from education and to making and saving money. What I'm trying to say is that if you have a choice, don't come to Lampeter, yes it may seem friendly and lovely on an open day, but once you're hear all that attention and optimism doesn't exist. I hope this helps with you're decision!

Study experience

The course, nay, the department is unorganised. The lecturers aren't given enough time to think about their students, instead their are overloaded with paper work. The lecturers, all two of them from April, are fantastic. But unfortunately if you come to Lampeter now you will be lucky to see this.

Facilities

The library holds most of the books you will need for your course, but don't expect anything else. The computers are about, and work from time to time... The bar is drap and dingy, more reminiscent of a grumpy 14 year olds smelly bedroom. Sports facilities? A 'hall' and field, don't expect anything else.

Postgraduate life

Loser's that sap money from the once thriving SU so they can waste it on dressing up as inaccurate 'medieval knights'. The Sports Society side of things used to around, but since the new union management have got themselves in, on the basis of the medieval lot, most of the usual societies you would expect don't exist. I'm not in any...

Job prospects

Undergraduate degrees are over rated, job prospects - nil.

Great community feel

Social Anthropology Ma (Hons)

University Of St Andrews

Harriet, November 2007

Overall score

Its small so there is a great community/family feel especially by the time you hit 3rd/4th year. The setting is stunning, as the old uni sits on the Scottish coast. Lecturers are very helpful and supportive. The uni could improve learning resources e.g. the library.

Study experience

The course is very good, lecturers are helpful, however applied anthropology is rather absent.

Facilities

There is a 24 hour IT library available, typically you don't have to wait for or book a computer. Uni bar is cheap and usually most people end up in the early hours. St Andrews has the highest concentration of pubs for any town in Europe. Sports facilities are bad. Very small gym.

Postgraduate life

Loads from sailing to wine and cheese!
