Very enjoyable year

Classics & Ancient History MPhil (B)

University Of Birmingham

Laura, September 2007

Overall score

Study experience

This course involved 50% teaching and 50% individual research. Lecture hours totaled, at most, 3 hours per week. The rest of the time is personal research. Being a research degree meant that a lot of work was needed on a personal level, with guidance, rather than being told what to do. prior knowledge is definitely necessary, the thesis would be extremely difficult to someone with no knowledge, even though the subject is chosen by the student. This course definitely allows you to progress, usually onto a PhD. You get out of the course what you put into it, the more work you do, the better your results and the more you enjoy the subject and the research. This is not a course for those wishing to scrape a pass. Since classes are small (one of mine had only 4 students) there is a lot of interaction with the teaching staff. Their enthusiasm rubs off on the students and inspires you to work harder.

Facilities

Lectures are held in comfortable lecture theatres. Seminars, depending on class size, take place either in the department library or museum, or in the lecturer's offices. this makes for a cosy and friendly atmosphere. IT resources are excellent. Library resources are adequate, in some cases they are excellent but it depends on the specific area of your research.

Postgraduate life

At MPhil level the students are there to work and are of roughly the same mentality. It's not a course to be entered into lightly, it requires a lot of work on your own, so self discipline and motivation are definite must-haves. The small class sizes mean that students often form close groups and meet up outside of lectures for both academic discussions and social drinking.

UWICked

Broadcast Media Mphil

University Of Wales Institute, Cardiff (Uwic)

Nina, August 2007

Overall score

I am really really enjoying UWIC. The lecturers are fantastic and extremely helpful!

Study experience

The course is fantastic!!! We learn a huge variety of media and cultural related studies etc. The lecturers are extremely helpful and make you feel you are always supported...make sure you don't take advantage of them tho coz they're not shy in telling you!Don't really have tons of hours of lecturing a week, one or two intense full days and then one or two half days!I can't say this is the same for all the other courses but we have a very relaxed and informal style of lecturing where class discussions and debates occur all the time! My advice is.....be consciencious and do ur work in plenty of time, get researching etc when you know what the task is! Last minute work is stressful and generally not as good...take full advanatge of you lecturers help and guidance.

Facilities

The Library is extremely helpful in every manner...they have plenty of books that i need 4 my course etc The only problem i had is with the computers being slow or causing problems for me, however, this problem is being addressed as they are putting new compurters throughout the library this summer!

Postgraduate life

I represented Wales in Netball when i was younger but when it came to trying to join the netball team, i wasn't really given a look in as all the places went to the cyncoed sports students! Not really joined any other clubs!

Job prospects

Plenty of surrounding universities 4 M.A's like Swansea, Treforrest, Newport etc! Cardiff is very up and coming and new office buildings and job opportunities are coming up all the time!
