Postgraduate Statistics reviews

ProcrastiNation

Mathematics MSc

University Of Chester

Andy, June 2010

Overall score

Overall, I have enjoyed my time studying at the University of Chester. I would definitely recommend it to others who want a small, community based campus with excellent facilities. I would advise students to join a club or society within the Uni.

Study experience

I thought the course wouldn't be as interesting as it has turned out to be. I definitely feel that it has put me in good stead for what I want to become. I would advise students to get assignments done on time and to revise hard because the elation is far better than the disappointment.

Facilities

The library facilities are above average with new PCs and laptops becoming available all the time. Sometimes it's difficult to find a computer but with the large amount on offer, it's hard to not find a free PC. The bar is cosy and warm with a great atmosphere. Well stocked and good facilities make it a great place to relax and socialise. Full sports facilities are availabe from a rugby field, all weather pitch, climbing wall and gymnasium.

Postgraduate life

There are many societies on offer in the University and almost anyone could find one which suited their needs. There are sports clubs, recreational clubs and clubs designed for foreign students. I'm not a member of any clubs.

Job prospects

I am currently undertaking a Postgraduate Degree and I hope to go into full-time employment to clear the debts I have accrued over the years. I would then like to continue studying in America. My course will allow me to look for jobs and gain employment since Mathematics is a sought after subject. I will not pursue any further studies in this University since I would like to travel and expand my horizons.

Medical Statistics MSC @ LSHTM end of year review

Medical Statistics MSc

London School Of Hygiene And Tropical Medicine

Adrian , June 2007

Overall score

Study experience

Now that i am 2 weeks before my final exams, and avoiding revision, my views about the course have not particularly changed. In some ways the more interesting modules like Advance Statistical Modeling were the most interesting modules delivered on the course. Again the teaching is excellent. James Carpenter and Mike Kenward who deliver large chunks of the course are very clear concise and accurate. This is exactly what you want when someone is explaining complex ideas. I think if your considering this course be sure you are interested in the applications of statistics to medicine, and are reasonably good at explaining your thoughts via essays. In addition you need good computing skills. If you have trouble with simple packages like word and excel you may strugle with the more complex packages.

Facilities

The faccilities at the school are preety much as described in a previous review. However when the current building work is finished i am sure lshtm will be a wonderful place to study. However, the course orgainisers could still do more to accomodate the needs of the students by providing better white boards for lectures. The basics are being sadly overlooked.

Postgraduate life

All the students are great and the atmosphere is really nice. Everyone is supportive and always willing to help. There doesn't appear to be much competition between students which is nice.

The MSc in Medical Statistics @ LSHTM

Medical Statistics MSc

London School Of Hygiene And Tropical Medicine

Adrian , January 2007

Overall score

Study experience

The MSc in Medical Statistics @ LSHTM is a well organised and interesting course. There is a diverse range of individuals studying, with different academic and cultural backgrounds. There is the obvious bunch of maths and statistics graduates, but there is also a good handful of engineering types, software programmers, clinicians, biological sciences graduates as well. The age range on the course is also quite wide, with the fresh under grads and also the more mature grads who are returning for a bit more excitement and training. This year 06-07 students are about half and half home and international, which is what you would expect from LSHTM. The course for 07-08 is being heavily reorganised for term 1. However I imagine the content will be fairly similar, we started with all the basics types of models and a splash of a probability to ease into things, and then progressed into the idea of likelihood and regression. The course is quite fast paced for the uninitiated like myself, but still allows relative novices to keep up with things, or so it seems, i can imagine if you have a BSc in stats there will be a fair bit of repetition in the first term, however that means it should be a good bit of revision. As well as the stats there is also a basic epi module and clinical trials both give a good foundation to the subjects, I personally think the epi could be taught better but i think i maybe alone in this opinion. The lectures are generally split morning and afternoon, which is then divided into lecture and practical giving you the chance to reinforce the idea taught previously. Its a 9.30 start and then a half hour 20 min break midmorning finishing for lunch at 12.30 the afternoon starts at 2 and finishes at 5, again with a 30 min break in the middle. The breaks seem quite long and i think they are for some subjects, but on the days with tricky lectures you are very thankful. You have lectures Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday its quite heavy. Currently the school is undergoing a lot of building work, and it seems the lectures are dotted all around UCL, Birbeck and LSHTM. I am sure this will settle down when the building work has finished, but currently is a bit of a pain. The school is pretty well stocked for computers, and the IT support is really good for a small place. My only criticism is that your not given a stata licence for the year of study. I think this may be being addressed though. For every module you get a chunky folder with all the course material and notes, which is nice and handy. Another handy thing is your personal tutor, i think the ratios are good probably 1 to 3, which is a lot better than some places which have 1 to 10, tutor to students. Overall this course is really good, but they need to work on their teaching rooms making sure they are properly equipped with whiteboards and projectors so you can see the overheads. I would give them 90% for content of the course, but 50% for equipment and facilities, and 95% for helpfulness especially the legend Dan Altman, probably one of the courses best assets.
