Modern and Contemporary Studies MA
Newcastle University
Stu, May 2010Overall score
Having completed an English Literature degree at Newcastle University, I really didn't know what to do with myself. The job market was a little dire, as we were just coming out of the recession and I didn't fancy travelling (I get scared going on buses by myself, let along trekking the Himalayas or something!). I had done well on my BA and decided that academia might be a possible route. This is how I chose to do an MA...
Unwise, perhaps - Universities aren't big fans of people who go on to postgraduate study because they don't want to get a job and see the end of their student experience. I'll say right off the bat that they're right; postgrad life really isn't partying every night; it involves lot of hard work, and a lot of self motivated study. It's also quite difficult to scrape money together, especially given that there is no student finance, as such, for postgrad study.
However, I was incredibly lucky to secure a prestigious Robinson Bequest Bursary - I received one of just two bursaries, picked from around 100 applicants..., which paid for all of my fees. Of course, it's not something you can rely on, but it's encouraging to know that there IS funding out there for those committed to finding it.
Study experience
Despite the limited hours of teaching on my English Literature BA, I was still shocked at how little direct contact time such as lectures, seminars etc there was on my course. As such, self motivated study really is the name of the game - don't come if you're not prepared to clock up some hours in the library! That said, lecturers are almost always available for advice, reading suggestions...sometimes even a swift pint!
Facilities
The library is top notch, they have over a million books as well as massive amounts of online journals, e-books etc to access. The computer clusters are always busy, often jam packed with noisy rahs talking about their 'gap yah's. I was also a member of the Uni gym for two years, which is always busy but a good place to make friends if you're willing to reach out. The SU bar is also a cool place to hang out if you fancy a quiet one- Tekken 5 and Ghost Squad with a pint...result!
Postgraduate life
The Uni has a huge list of clubs - from Rugby Union to the Neighbours Society...And if you can't find a club you want to join, you can create it (as long as you have 15 people who want to join).
But I'm sure you can find something!; RockSoc, Ultimate Frisbee, writing for The Courier...
Job prospects
My course has helped me think about my job prospects a lot, and I've had several part time jobs alongside my course; writing freelance for MixMag, The Sunday Times, The Crack and a number of paid blogs etc.
