Human Rights & Criminal Justice - Llm / Mssc
Queen's University Belfast
Eleanor, March 2007Overall score
Queen's is a lovely University, and Belfast is a lovely city to be in. Although not a campus university, the south of the city is definitely the student area, and so all of the uni buildings are quite close. The problem is that, with so many local students, it does tend to go quite dead at the weekends (usually stretching from friday morning/lunch to sunday evening or even monday morning) as they all go home to their parents. So don't come here if you don't like too much peace and quiet.
Study experience
I did Philosophy for my undergrad, and absolutely adored it. The lecturers were always incredibly generous with their time, students were encouraged to argue/ask questions in class, and the small nature of the school made it really personal. As with most arts degrees, I didn't have that many lectures, so you need to have a fair amount of self-motivation, to do the reading and preparation that is required. But I liked that. It meant that I was in control of what work i did and when.
My Masters in Human Rights and Criminal Justice is also really interesting, though a lot of work. There's quite a lot of choice of modules, and although it took me a little while to get into all the law terms, there are a fair number of us who have not done law before, all from different backgrounds.
Facilities
Of course the libraries and computers do get busy at times, but I'd say only to a reasonable level. They're campaigning for longer opening hours at the moment (particularly at the weekends, when they aren't open that much) but they're already open 24/7 over exam periods. The sports facilities have just been renovated, and are really good now, with some more work ongoing I believe.
Postgraduate life
You can do basically anything! I've been a member of trampolining and badminton clubs, both of which were very good and very popular. They offer loads of different dance classes, and the Amnesty International society is very active.
Job prospects
Guess it depends what you want to do, but NI is not that big, and as cities go, Belfast is not that massive, so if you're looking for something other than your average office job, you might find it a bit difficult.

De Montfort University
Rebecca, November 2008Overall score
I recommend DMU because it is really easy going and everyone is laid back. Because there isn't the pressure of it being a top univeristy you have fun and learn.
Study experience
The courses and lecturers were brilliant and they made it fun.
Facilities
The library was amazing and it was open 24 hours.
Postgraduate life
There were lots of clubs but the best I have to say was archery.

Anti-Corruption Policy and Strategy Master Certificate
Anon, April 2008Overall score
Study experience
Extremely relevant, I must confess. I never expected it. The course is so easy to understand and its an eye opener. I'm surely loving it. I'm getting what I want out of the course and even more than I envisioned. It offers me the chance to progress. My main dream was to become a Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Officer.
Facilities
Your PC is your classroom.
Postgraduate life
I always look forward to logging in and studying. You only mix with men and women (diplomats) at social events, every month. You can study for 1, 2 or 3 hours per day, it's up to you. Socialising is part of the programme.
