MSc Strategic Information Systems
Cardiff University
Jan, April 2009Overall score
Study experience
The MSc course in Strategic Information Systems is officially targetted at experienced IT/IS professionals with aspirations to move into a management position. The course officially requires an IT undergraduate degree as well as a minimum of 2 years relevant work experience. Due to an apparent shortage of candidates, however, the School is rather lenient on both requirements, which leads to a very mixed classroom environment including both IT professionals as well as complete IT newbies. As a result, all technical modules (software development, computer architectures, object-oriented technologies, database management etc.) are of a rather low level, comparable to second or third year undergraduate modules. The main emphasis of the course is on a discipline called "Systems Thinking" and the "systemic"/"holistic" approach to information systems as systems supporting the business enterprise. Three different (soft) systemic approaches are taught: soft systems methodology (SSM), system dynamics as well as a metaphorical approach to systems thinking. These disciplines are very far removed from the technological components of the course and best suited for students wanting to move into STRATEGIC management. I would personally recommend this course for students with a solid IT background and a true and keen interest on strategic management. The course is far less well suited to IT experts with aspirations to move into PROJECT / hands-on management. Also, the core message of the course is that technology does not matter compared to organisational/human aspects of IS development. As a result, I would not recomment the course to anyone with an actual interest in information TECHNOLOGY - they might be disappointed. The lecturers and tutors build a very close relationship with students over the duration of the course. Almost all teaching staff are of very high quality and take a true interest in the students' progress. Almost all modules are assessed via coursework (30%) and an exam (70%). Students can expect a very high workload through essay-based assignments, which are usually in the range of 3000 to 8000 words. A written module pack including a guiding text as well as a selection of academic papers is provided for each module. Students are expected to work through these packs on their own BEFORE attending the lectures. Hence, a considerable amount of time needs to be planned for reading. There are only two presence days a week (4-6 full days of lectures per module). Hence, students need to be self-motivated and capable of organising their workload over the term.
Facilities
The School has very good facilities, including 3 computing labs. The Queens Building has its own library as well as a cafeteria and a restaurant. Students have 24 hour access to the computing facilities. At the same time, it is recommended for students to have their own laptop/computer as they will spend considerable time on assignments. The University offers 5 postgraduate facilities in the Student Union building. The quiet reading rooms in the Graduate Centre are a great place to study, compared to the often noisy library. Some lecturers also use Blackboard, the university's e-learning environment.
Postgraduate life
In 2007 only about 12 full time students were registered for the SIS course. Hence, students get to know each other very well over the duration of the course. Some assignments are group work, which makes it easier to get to know fellow students. Classroom discussion is strongly encouraged, which is a great plus seeing that lectures are usually blocked in full days from 9-5. I would say that the course offers a great opportunity to learn from more experienced class mates, almost as much as from the lecturers themselves. I made many friends during my year in Cardiff.
