Postgraduate reviews

Hard work but worth it!

English as a Second Language (Humanities) MA

University Of Birmingham

Amelia, November 2007

Overall score

I am really enjoying getting involved this year, running a soc and doing events management with Barnardos.

There are so many opportunities at the uni, make sure you get involved in the 1st year, else you'll regret it!!

Also make sure you've checked out exactly what the course entails.

Study experience

I have 9 hours a week. The lecturers are great and supportive but be aware there is a huge reading load. Almost neverending.

Facilities

We have loads of different library's and computers, the only time it is difficult to find a computer is revision time!

Postgraduate life

The best club is spoons.

Job prospects

The uni careers service has really helped me to think. There's always presentations going on about different career choices and areas.

PGCE Primary Education

Birmingham City University

Anon, October 2007

Overall score

Study experience

Birmingham City University (previously University of Central England - UCE) is a fantastic place to study. I decided to teach in Primary Education after years of teaching English abroad. I had travelled and enjoyed life and now wanted to bring up my son. Working as a teacher still allows me to travel and have fun with my son. The teachers were brilliant on this course. Apparently some of them are quite famous in their field of work. All I know is that they were all little boxes full of a lot of information useful to teaching and much more. The course has definitely prepared me to move on in my career.

Facilities

The classrooms are all fully equiped with interactive whiteboards and all of the modern technology expected at a professional institution. The student facilities are outstanding. There are two huge IT rooms accessible all day Mon - Fri until late. On site there is a restaurant that serves hot food up until 6.00pm.

Postgraduate life

The students on my course already had a degree. The youngest person was I guess around 21. However, the majority of students were people looking for a change in career. There were lawyers, surveyors, musicians, psychologists and many more people looking to teach. They were all extremely supportive. There were only a handful of men on this course.
