Postgraduate Law and Legal Studies reviews

Beware!

Law LLM

University Of Surrey

Polu, June 2009

Overall score

My university was not as structured as I'd like. It is very hands on and I was working on my own accord, so discipline is needed!

Study experience

Be prepared; some lecturers are there to lecture and not always willing to help.

Facilities

The facilities are not too bad.

Postgraduate life

Job prospects

There was not enough given for students.

Great uni

Law LLM

University Of Nottingham

Andrew, January 2008

Overall score

A superb university with a great reputation, guaranteed first year accommodation, beautiful campus with lots of wide open spaces and a huge amount of fun to be had. I had a ball.

Study experience

Did Law degree and found it very heavy. For those a little more committed to their subject would I'm sure have found little fault

Facilities

Libraries and hall bars all good though I spent a lot more time in one than the other.

Postgraduate life

Amazing and seemingly never ending selection of clubs to join. Go for something you've never considered before ? great and cheap way to gain new experiences and meet new people. I decided on surfing and was competing in the National Surf Champs in Newquay the first time I ever got on a board. Cocktail society was a favourite too.

Job prospects

Dont think it necessarily matters which uni you go to, more that you know what you want to do.

Having said that, Nottingham is generally v well respected by employers and they say Law is a ?good grounding?. Not sure for what other than a legal career but that?s what ?they? say.

Superior!

Law LLM

King's College London (University Of London)

Joshua, November 2009

Overall score

No place is perfect but King's Law comes as close to it as I can imagine. Academically it blows my mind and everyone is so friendly as we are all in the same boat. The experience is essentially multi-national, which provides one with a phenomenal opportunity to engage in comparative legal discussions on which ever legal niche one might be exploring.

I would definitely recommend King's to anyone, but be warned - unless you are a truly exceptional, it is not for the lazy and those who start reading a week before an exam. Besides, make sure your finances are in order - there is so much academic work you would not really want to have to lose out on anything by having to earn money alongside.

Study experience

Some of the greatest minds in the field teach at King's and almost every week they bring in experts and practitioners to lecture on their specific areas of expertise.

Facilities

The library is enormous and is also one of the most beautiful buildings in the area. Besides, depending on your field of study, you also have access to other University of London libraries.

PCs are always available - I have never yet had to try to find one and wireless internet is everywhere and really fast.

Virtual networks and virtual desktops let you work from home as if you were on the Uni network and you can use Eduroam to gain roaming wireless access at pretty much any university in the world, which helps international students from less fortunate countries, possibly unable to get fast broadband at home.

Uni has its own state of the art gym.

Postgraduate life

The widest spectrum I have seen. Besides - if you cannot find one you like, start one yourself with a few like-minded students!

Job prospects

I am contemplating a PhD but at a later stage. King's would definitely be one of my top options.

Job-wise - enviable employment prospects. They actually offer you jobs even during the course - internships and the like, which are not advertised anywhere else and are quite exclusive.
