International Relations and Sociology MA (Hons)

Luba, July 2010Overall score
Aberdeen is an amazing place. It has all the best from being a small city, so less crime, while all the while a place full of opportunity and entertainment. It is very internationally oriented so there are a lot of cultures that can be encountered and experiences. Aberdeen University is extremely friendly and welcoming so I am sure it would welcome all new students and make them feel as I did - part of a family!
Study experience
The courses are exactly what I envisioned, however, there could be some improvement. More specifically, first and second year tutors are PhD students, so often there are clashes of teaching styles or not very clear expectations. Third and Forth are fine as the tutors are the lecturers so the requirements are clear and consistent. Other then that, if one is responsible, they will earn a first as the courses are structured so that those that work, will succeed. Moreover, there is help provided by the Student Association to help with out of course work - learning how to write essays or how to asses reading materials etc.
Facilities
The library is amazing! It also has elaborate online database. There are also plenty of computers. Many stipulate that they have problems finding a computer but they didn't bother to learn that EW Building is not the only place to get a computer, so I utterly disagree. I have never had a problem fining a computer when I need it.
We do have full sports facilities - only last year the Sports Village opened to complement the facilities we already have.
Postgraduate life
Our university has many clubs and societies. It is very easy to open a society as long as it does not discriminate against a certain group. There are societies based in academic departments, dance, music, fashion, political parties and so on. If the society you want does not exist, you can always make your own. I am a member of a few, but this year I will be the president of the sociological society I formed at the end of last year.
Job prospects
I would like to do a postgraduate degree. The courses I am taking are very helpful and are leading me on the right path to my future career. I feel like I know more and am better prepared. I don't know yet if I will stay at the same uni as I haven't finished my research yet.

History and International Relations MA (Hons)

Karen, January 2008Overall score
I have really enjoyed my time and University and would highly recommend it to others. Specificly if your not sure what it is that you want to study then the choice and flexibility is really good.
Study experience
Much more lecture based than school and there is little presure from teaching staff. You have to be a lot more motivated to do your work and make sure that you manage your time effectivly.
Facilities
There are definately enough computers on campus and the whole campus has wireless access so you can use your own laptop to get on-line aswell. Both the library and sport facilities are very good and currently being upgraded so they will be second to none very soon.
Postgraduate life
There is an absolutely huge choice of clubs and societies and most of them are very well established. I have done a lot of debating whilst at University and I have found that this is a really good way to meet people not just in Aberdeen but at instituations all over the UK, and internationaly.
Job prospects
I didn't really chose my degree for the job prospects, I chose subjects which interested me. I intend to go and do a postgrad in law, which is far more employable than an undergraduate law degree.
