Composition and Electroacoustic Composition MA
Bangor University
Details Not Given, May 2010Overall score
Bangor is a small city with fabulous country around it. Don't expect riotous night-life or designer labels. Expect a relaxed atmosphere in a slightly old-fashioned place of learning. The tutors are extremely accessible and friendly - they're not wrapped up in following their own paths. The area includes mountains, lakes and great beaches - and interesting culture and heritage. You don't have to be able to speak Welsh, but the language is quite high-profile here.
Study experience
Certainly the facilities here are very good, in terms of the studios and software. There is a blooming School of Music with students from many different countries and many opportunities to join in the Orchestras, choirs, etc.
Although almost exclusively Classical in its musical tastes, the electroacoustic music area is very strong with a supportive staff.
Although one is left alone to pursue one's path, help is on hand if needed. It's a relief (as a mature student) to be treated as a mature person, especially as a Master's student.
Facilities
Quite a decent library, but not that big. There don't seem to be enough computers and I haven't noticed any sports facilities.
Postgraduate life
There are clubs and societies. But like Groucho Marx, I wouldn't join any club that would have me as a member!
Job prospects
I am currently studying for a Postgrad degree. I hope to stay at Bangor to do a PhD - but the fees are extremely high (in my view). It's probably the same everywhere; but having built a good relationship with the tutors and because I can live at home, it's my first choice.
