Social Sciences Phd
University Of Abertay Dundee
Lorin, April 2007Overall score
The PhD program is great for learning self-reliance, as there is little help from supervisors. As I said in the tag line - this school has GREAT intentions, but SERIOUSLY LACKS follow-through - i.e. profs will tell you one thing, but NEVER follow-through.... (I hear undergrads are pretty well taken care of though.)
Study experience
As a PhD student I do not have courses or lectures. I do have profs though and know that the attitude towards classes varies from (one prof) who is dedicated to both his classes and students to (another prof) who only attends classes when he has nothing else to do. However, as far as my understanding goes, most profs are dedicated to their undergraduate classes.
Facilities
There are supposed to be many facilities at the uni, however some are quite difficult to find, i.e. the sports center, and which computer lab is open to students at which times. The library is NOT extensive, but the librarians are GREAT & will help in whatever way they can.
Postgraduate life
If there are, I don't know of them ... I have found that some information at the uni is INCREDIBLY hard to find - this is one of those subjects.
Job prospects
I am unfamiliar with the statistics upon graduation. However, from a personal perspective (including discussions with graduates) there doesn't seem to be any type of 'advantage' when applying for a job as there might/is with other universities - i.e. no uni loyalty.

MA (Hons) Applied Social Sciences
University Of Glasgow
Mandy, December 2008Overall score
Be prepared to work hard and socialise hard. Glasgow University is a great place to learn and you will find your views being challenged all the time. You learn to think more about the world at large. There is also a large and diverse student body, with all sorts of societies and the two student unions. It's safe to say you will make some great friends here.
Study experience
My course has opened my eyes to so many different things and I'd say it has widened my horizons. For new students, it is important to go to lectures and keep up with the reading, etc. It's the guaranteed way to keep on top of things. Don't forget to have fun though/
Facilities
The library is excellent and very well stocked. It has over 2 million books anyway. It can be a bit of a rush for computers come essay time, so it's advisable to get a laptop if you can afford it. There is a lot of provision for wireless internet on campus and facilities available to study with your laptop. The best bar on campus is Jims bar in the QMU. The drink is cheap and on the whole, the staff are friendly. There are also good sports facilities, including a specialist area in the Garscube estate. The main campus also has a very well equipped gym. There seems to be a team for every type of sport, the rugby team in particular, has a ''rep'!
Postgraduate life
There are lots of clubs and socs you can join, from the crazy to semi normal. I'm a member of iO, the SF and Fantasy society and the Anthropology and Sociology Film Society, where we meet up once a week, watch ethnographic film and generally geek over it with no shame.
Job prospects
There is a good careers service, which constantly sends out emails about internships, jobsfairs and graduate schemes. It can be a bit much, if like me, you very much want to continue post-grad, which I think my degree, particularly the honours program, has really helped me out with. It has helped me to identify areas within the social sciences I would like to work in.
