Postgraduate Writing reviews

Great course, relaxed atmosphere and friendly social life

Modern Literature and Creative Writing MA

Loughborough University

Jessica, February 2010

Overall score

I decided to do a master's as i wanted to continue studying my subject in greater depth. I found the course interesting and enjoyable and i would definitely recommend it.

Study experience

Lecture and seminars were informative and challenging and we were given lots of free reign to pursue our own individual interests.

Facilities

All excellent, and easily accessible on one campus.

Postgraduate life

Lecturers and students socialised out of lecture time and the course was an opportunity to meet like-minded people. The university campus and hall life is great, although i lived in a house during my MA.

Job prospects

I think having a master's has been useful in interviews and so on. I didn't really utilise the university career's service as much as i could have.

Make sure the course is definitely the one for you. Do as much research as you can on the university, the course, the tutors, students and accommodation. Make sure it has a good student's union. as it can be invaluable for lifting your spirits and for making new friends Get your assignments in on time and make good use of the library.

Study experience

Talk to your tutor; gett to know him/her and what they require. They all work differently and never be afraid to ask questions. Turn up for lectures on time and take lots of notes.

Facilities

The library is excellent, well stocked ,staff are incredibly helpful. There is a huge bank of computers and printing facilities on each floor. There are quite areas for study and rooms you can book if you need to do presentations There are several bars and clubs all have great atmospheres. The student union bar organises discos and quiz nights.

Supportive staff with lots of opportunities

Creative and Critical Writing, Film, Media, New Media, Journalism, Creative Studies, Drama, Professional Writing PhD

Bangor University

Amy, May 2010

Overall score

I have enjoyed my time at Bangor University, I joined the School of Creative Studies and Media when the school first opened and have enjoyed involving myself in all of the exciting events on offer. I have felt supported by the wonderful staff and student welfare systems in place across the university.

For first time students, I encourage you to come and look around before you apply and see what type of place you'll be moving to. It is small and can feel quite isolated but the students make their own community and there are lots of things to do if you know where to find them. The university is very good at helping you make the first leap.

Study experience

The course and the school as a whole is quite different to what I expected as it has given me the opportunity to look at so many different aspects of the creative industries and forge invaluable interdiscipinary links.

I am confident that the experiences I have received during my PhD will prepare me for my future career in academia.

Be sure that PhD is the right step for you, it is a long and difficult process but completely worthwhile if it is what you want to do and you have a real passion for your subject and education.

Facilities

For a PhD student the library is a little understocked, but most departments are willing to order in any books you desperately need or allow you to order via the inter-library loan system.

There are plenty of computers on site which are easily access 24 hours a day.

The sporting facilities are a unfortunately small considering the fact that the university has a sport science department. The gym is quite small and offers little discount for students.

The university has large student union club/bar/music venue which is popular with the undergraduate student and a smaller bar on the halls of residence site called Bar Uno.

Postgraduate life

The university has clubs and societies to suit all types of interests, and if there isn't one that takes your fancy you can start your own with the support of the students' union. The university also has a large sports union which offers all sorts of different activities and 'have a go' weeks which encourage students to go and try lots of different sports for free.

Job prospects

I chose to come to Bangor to do my postgraduate degree having studied at a different institution for my undergrad. My PhD has not only provided me with an education and (hopefully) a qualification but an opportunity to experience all of the areas involved in professional academic work. I have organised conferences, given papers, written articles, and become a tutor in the school. All of this was possible thanks to the support provided by the staff within the school, both academic and administrative.
