COURSE INFORMATION This Masters degree is intended for anyone interested in policy issues in the areas of Social and Community Development and should be of interest to those in the voluntary and community sectors as well as those who work for government departments, district councils or agencies involved in social provision. It is an interdisciplinary course intended to encourage cross-sectoral understanding, and will engage with current issues in the field. The degree is designed to bring together practitioners and policy makers from a number of different areas. It will emphasise student participation and partnership working across different sectors of the local economy. There will be a significant element of comparative work.COURSE AIMS:At the core of this Masters will be the values, principles and practice associated with community development work (as illustrated by the National Occupational Standards). The evolution of policy in Northern Ireland will be examined, but it will also be set in the wider context of the changing relations between the state and other providers in the international context. Attention will be paid to globalisation, and the new forms of governance that are emerging, including third way politics that place more responsibility with voluntary providers. The degree will involve seminars bringing together perspectives from different disciplines and different sectors, and there will be an emphasis on student participation and reflection on current practice in the field.MODULES:Taught modules will examine topics such as Community Development Theory, Practice and Context, Management and Leadership, Models for Sustainability Communities, and Reflective/ Work-Based Learning. This degree is available on a part-time basis, with taught modules during the first two years and a dissertation in the final year (15,000 20,000 words). It is possible to exit after successfully completing taught modules with a Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma in Social and Community Development.
Necessary qualifications:
Applicants should normally hold either: an honours degree or equivalent qualification; or a degree or equivalent professional qualification with significant experience of working in the field of social or community development. Potential applicants must demonstrate experience of working in the community, voluntary or statutory sectors.
