Distinctive and Exciting

MA Writing

Sheffield Hallam University

Katherine, April 2007

Overall score

Study experience

The course aims to take already skilled writers from amateur level to professional, and the ever increasing list of award-winning graduates gives an indication of how successful the course is! The work is never easy and the course moves at a speedy pace, but this teaches more about deadlines and the writing industry than an easier course ever could. The tutors are all professional, talented and incredibly helpful - and are all themselves practising writers. The curriculum is clearly laid out at the start of the course but there is always plenty of help on hand for those who need to clarify any aspect of it.

Facilities

For a course of this type, the library and IT facilities are probably the most important resources and there are no problems with these at all. The university is currently having a reshuffle of its campuses so things are set to improve in this department.

Postgraduate life

The difficulty of getting on to the course means that, once they have made it, students are excited to be there and willing to work hard. The university prides itself on fostering a atmosphere of peer support, and encourages students to support one another and offer advice and criticism on each other's work.

MSc Leisure Events and Facilities Management

MSc Leisure Events and Facilities Management

Sheffield Hallam University

Dale, December 2007

Overall score

Study experience

The course builds you up from foundations but a good undergrad degree is required. Initial modules include Critical Thinking - a module designed to get your level of writing to the required masters standards. It also introduces you to research methods, useful later on. The university also run dissertation workshops, which are out of normal ours but are extremely useful. The tutors are mostly from industry and demonstrate there knowledge with lots of their real life examples. The university is modern and not your standard redbrick. It is centrally located, good access to buses and the train station.

Facilities

The learning centre has just been refurbd and extended to included 200 more pc's. It is rare that you cannot find a computer, only in extremely busy times (deadlines). Classrooms are modern and have all the necessary facilities e.g. projector, computers etc.

Postgraduate life

The course is small at around 15 students per year. However I found that I was one of the only British students on the course, this made it often difficult to communicate.
