Course Summary

COURSE OVERVIEW

The MA in English Literature allows you to roam a stimulating field of English studies and draw on the individual research expertise of our experienced staff.

You shape your own pathway through course, selecting compelling modules from the MA in English and a combination from other specialist MAs such as the MA in Welsh Writing in English and the MA in Gender and Culture.

This could see you combine gender and humour in medieval and early modern Europe with a module on writing radio drama.

A 60-credit dissertation project in the second part of the course will investigate a topic of your choosing.

ENGLISH LITERATURE EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

You will develop excellent oral and creative writing skills, and learn to present your ideas in a range of formats.

Graduates from this course enter a range of creative industries including publishing, broadcasting, marketing and advertising. They also undertake research degrees and pursue a career in academia.

Our career support services include:

  • Employability workshops, employers’ talks, bespoke events and careers fairs
  • Individual advice and guidance from professionally qualified Careers Advisers
  • Help with finding jobs, internships, work placements and volunteering opportunities
  • Access to information resources on a wide range of career management topics
  • Funding to support student internship opportunities and Student Society/Club events.

We also provide help and advice for Swansea University Alumni up to two years after you graduate.

Modules

This module is designed to introduce you to key practical and conceptual tools necessary for scholarship at Master's level and beyond. The aim is for you to gain the competencies and confidence to complete and enjoy the degree. In a seminar and occasional workshop format, you will practise a range of core professional research skills. You will be encouraged to reflect on your own learning and academic development to become a more independent and self-directed lifelong learner. You will produce a Portfolio of assessed work. These activities will support your work in other MA modules, particularly EN-M41 Research Practice and your EN-M31 Dissertation, while also equipping you with a set of transferable skills that are highly valued by many employers.
