Course Summary

Develop in-depth knowledge and skills of research methods. Prepare yourself for an academic or professional career with a focus on politics and economics.

On completion of this course you will have a deepened, interdisciplinary understanding of social science discourses and methods for analysing global processes of change, both generally and in specified policy areas.

You will also be knowledgeable on key contributions to thinking about social, economic and political aspects of the planet as an interdependent social system, and will have an understanding of how global and national policy processes interact.

The course aims to equip you for a career as a professional researcher in an academic or non-academic environment by developing your core research skills. You'll be encouraged to review and critically evaluate approaches to research and their application, and to identify and investigate your own original research questions.

South West Doctoral Training Partnership

This MRes is recognised by the Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC), specifically, as part of the larger South West Doctoral Training Partnership (SWDTP). It can be taken as a course in its own right or if you hold an SWDTP studentship you can take the 1+3 (MRes + PhD) pathway.

If you wish to be considered for a 1+3 SWDTP studentship, then you must apply for your preferred PhD route and not the stand alone MRes. You should follow our how to apply and funding guidelines.

For those holding a 1+3 SWDTP studentship, progression from the MRes to the MPhil or PhD stage is dependent on an acceptable level of achievement.

Modules

The module will fulfil the ESRC requirement for training in core research design, collection and analysis skills by addressing the on the ground characteristics and challenges of 'doing' interdisciplinary research. On completion of the module students will be able to critically assess concepts such as interdisciplinarity, multidisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity. They will have an acquired knowledge and practical skills of how a range of research methods can be integrated in an ethically sound manner to examine interdisciplinary problems, and will have developed an appreciation of the importance of pertinent inter-disciplinary thinking.
