Course Summary

About the course

This flexible course is the first of its kind in the UK and will offer you a seamless progression from our highly-regarded PgCert Dental Law and Ethics, and combines intensive study days with supported online learning.

You will broaden your expertise in areas of particular interest, and increase your overall knowledge of the concepts and theories that impact on this important subject.

Why choose this course?

  • Study one core unit that is designed to deepen your understanding of law and ethics, and choose from optional units which allow you to focus on patient safety, human factors and organisational development concepts
  • Explore the subject with an experienced, interdisciplinary team made up of university and visiting staff, and is likely to include dentists, health and social care professionals and legally trained professionals
  • Develop insights into the legal and ethical impact on everyday decision making in a practice setting
  • Gain an understanding of ways to address patient safety issues and how you can develop and manage your dental team
  • Benefit from a supervised project that provides an opportunity to engage in independent research and development.

This unique postgraduate course is concerned with the practical application of legal and ethical knowledge as well as the fundamental concepts and theories of law and ethics. It provides you the opportunity to examine your own practice in relation to the legal and ethical framework with specific emphasis on enhancing patient care and delivering excellent service.

This course provides you with opportunities to study selected legal and ethical principles which have immediate relevance to dental care and practice. At the Postgraduate Diploma stage you will have a chance to study how the law is made and the links between law, morality and human rights. This is followed by exploring the concepts that shape your understanding of management and leadership for staff and organisational development in the dental practice context.

At the final stage, you move to greater levels of independence, undertaking supervised research project work related to legal and /or ethical issues in dental practice.

The course encompasses both clinical and business contexts.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment incorporates both assessment of learning (summative) and assessment for learning (formative) elements.

Formative assessment is through the submission of draft work for feedback. Formative assessment provides opportunities to develop and test out ideas with peers and tutors in preparation for the summative work.

The tasks are designed to allow you to rehearse the types of thinking behaviours (analysis, critique and argumentation) that are necessary for the summative work, with tutor and peer support and feedback.
