Course Summary

Security is a major contemporary preoccupation; criminal law and criminal justice are key responses. Our LLM Criminal Law and Criminal Justice offers you an exciting, challenging and distinctive opportunity to explore and develop new critical perspectives on major contemporary national and international debates. It is ideal for legal and criminal justice professionals and practitioners.

The central focus of this multidisciplinary programme is the interface between criminal law and criminal justice. In addition to studying established critical and theoretical perspectives, the programme also has a humanities focus, which offers an opportunity for you to explore and engage with cutting-edge scholarship in the subject.

The LLM Criminal Law and Criminal Justice is delivered by staff from the School of Law and its Institute for Crime and Justice Policy Research, and a range of visiting international scholars and practitioners.

Graduates can pursue a career in the legal professions, police, probation, research, or journalism. Possible professions include community development officer, police or prison officer, social or youth worker, or adult guidance worker. This degree can also be useful in a variety of local government positions, or in becoming a researcher or journalist.

Read Joanna Perry, Hate Crimes Officer at the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), explaining how a Birkbeck Master's degree in law helped her build a successful career in criminal justice.

We offer a comprehensive Careers Service to help you advance your career, while our in-house, professional recruitment consultancy, Birkbeck Talent, works with London’s top employers to help you gain work experience that fits in with your evening studies.

The main aims of the Contemporary Issues in Criminal Justice module are: to consider key contemporary issues and developments in Criminal Justice studies and practice; to introduce a range of methodological perspectives. These two aims will be pursued by way of a series of seminars organised around readings and case studies that examine various aspects of contemporary criminal justice law, policy and practice from a range of perspectives. The module is designed not only to introduce students to a wide range of substantive issues but also to introduce a range of different theoretical and methodological frameworks though which to analyse criminal justice matters.
