Course Summary

This programme is designed to give you the skills and expertise you need to compete in the sport industry and related businesses and organisations, by combining specialist teaching about the principles and practice of sport management with general training in management, business organisation, strategy and research methods.

It covers several key areas, such as governance and regulatory issues, with emphasis on the wider sport sector. It will help you to develop a deeper understanding of management, governance and regulatory issues within the business of sport.

The programme is ideally suited to the needs of executives within a variety of sport organisations, such as professional sport clubs, governing bodies, media organisations and sport-related businesses. It is also ideal for members of supporters’ organisations, local government officials with responsibilities in the leisure field, and people with a general interest in the sport and media industries.

TEACHING

Teaching may include formal lectures, seminars, and practical classes and tutorials. Formal lectures are used in most degree programmes to give an overview of a particular field of study. They aim to provide the stimulus and the starting point for deeper exploration of the subject during your own personal reading. Seminars give you the chance to explore a specific aspect of your subject in depth and to discuss and exchange ideas with fellow students. They typically require preparatory study.

CAREERS AND EMPLOYABILITY

Graduates can pursue careers in sports administration for sport governing bodies, professional sport clubs such as football clubs, as consultants and/or business and marketing managers in the sport sector, and for public bodies involved in the administration of sport policy. See our sport jobs bulletin for details of current vacancies.

Modules

This module will introduce you to the role of marketing as a key organisational function. It will consider the main principles of marketing and demonstrate how these principles are relevant for a variety of sport organisations. For example, professional sports teams that face competition from a variety of other leisure activities need to understand the needs of their supporters and develop effective strategies to maintain and increase attendances. For National Governing Bodies, marketing a development programme to increase the membership base is critical to increasing participation. In a globalised and connected world, many sport organisations must engage with their fan bases on a worldwide scale in order to build and maintain their brands. For a local health and fitness centre, strong marketing initiatives are essential for attracting new members and encouraging them to remain loyal.
