Course Summary

This specialist postgraduate degree provides high-quality training in bioinformatics and an introduction to the emerging field of systems biology. It is run in parallel with an MRes course that includes a larger research component. The programme is ideal if you are from a scientific background and want to pursue research training in bioinformatics and systems biology, or if you are seeking a future career in both academia and industry. Bioinformatics and systems biology have grown dramatically in the last two decades and this programme has been designed to meet the needs of the pharmaceutical, chemical and biotechnology industries for research and development.

Assessment is an integral part of your university studies and usually consists of a combination of coursework and examinations, although this will vary from course to course - on some of our courses, assessment is entirely by coursework. You will need to allow time to complete coursework and prepare for exams.

Graduates go on to careers in the biotechnology, chemical and pharmaceutical sectors, as well as academia. Possible professions include healthcare scientist (genetics), research scientist, or higher educational lecturer. This degree can also be useful in becoming a science writer or software developer.

This module covers classical methods of biological sequence analysis and their applications to the problems of modern biology. It also discusses different aspects of molecular evolution, from sequence to structure and function.

Entry requirements

Course specific entry requirements: Applicants may have first degrees in a wide range of subjects, including biology, computer science, mathematics, chemistry or physics. Some practical knowledge of one programming language would be a distinct advantage. Mathematics to A-level or equivalent desirable, but GCSE/O-level considered. Standard postgraduate entry requirement is a second-class honours degree (2:2 or above) from a UK university, or an equivalent international qualification. We will review every postgraduate application to Birkbeck on its individual merits and their professional qualifications and/or relevant work experience will be taken into consideration positively.
