Birkbeck, University of London
Birkbeck, University of London-Overview

Birkbeck School of Law

Founded over 25 years ago, we are a leading critical law school within the University of London.

We draw on the values and methods of the social sciences and humanities, to shape our innovative approach to the study of law and criminology.

Our internationally recognised research guides our teaching, while strong links with the legal profession give our students real-world expertise and experience.

Department staff are acknowledged as experts in their fields, and play a prominent role in public affairs in the UK, Europe and internationally.

We offer something different from other universities: all of our classes take place between 6pm and 9pm, leaving you free to fill your days as you wish. If you need to work while you study, that’s no problem at Birkbeck. We are London’s only specialist provider of evening higher education.

By teaching exclusively in the evenings, we can offer you a flexibility that other universities can’t –an approach that means we attract a rich and diverse student population. There’s no such thing as a ‘typical’ Birkbeck student. With so many different experiences and perspectives, our classes have a unique atmosphere that you won’t find elsewhere.

As a Birkbeck student, you are also a University of London student. We’re proud to be a part of this prestigious and internationally renowned federation, standing alongside other members including University College London (UCL), King’s College London (KCL), the School of African and Oriental Studies (SOAS) and the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), among others.

We appreciate that postgraduate study is a big commitment. If you’re concerned about funding, then we can help you with the cost of studying within the School of Law. Find out more about our funding opportunities here.
