Overview

Every aspect of life was utterly transformed in the Modern period. The wide range of our staff research activity lets you focus on what most interests you, whether that’s the Cold War, the Russian Revolution 1917-21, ‘The Troubles’ in Ireland or the global impact of cultural shifts in the 1960’s.

At every stage you are encourage to feel part of our vibrant and supportive postgraduate community. Our innovative Reading Group module lets you shape the content of the course by selecting readings for discussion plus you’ll be able to present at workshops, seminars, and conferences.

You will be able to choose from a range of modules taught by leading experts in their field, design your own short courses, receive training in research skills, run your own reading group, undertake work placements, and complete a dissertation.

Your future career

The course offers opportunities to those who wish to pursue an eclectic generalist programme of modules and to those who seek specialisation in particular areas of Modern History. The underlying principle here is choice.

The MA is a significant qualification, but its successful completion could also fast track you to MPhil and ultimately to PhD qualifications. The research and writing skills you'll gain, together with the specialist disciplinary knowledge developed during the course and work placements undertaken, will enhance your employability and help you find a career in education, the civil service, journalism, finance, the law, politics, and heritage.

Modules

Dissertation topics are devised independently and developed with the guidance of a dissertation supervisor who offers advice on research sources and techniques, academic argument, dissertation structure and strategies towards completion.

A 2:2 honours degree in History or a relevant discipline is required. Holders of other qualifications will be considered individually.
