Course Summary

Why study Public Health Promotion?

Become an effective public health practitioner with our Masters in Public Health Promotion. Explore established public health concepts and gain insight into new and emerging themes.

To make a positive contribution and impact to the way public health promotions, interventions and services are delivered across a variety of roles within statutory, voluntary, and independent sector organisations, we must consider the wider determinants of health and wellbeing.

This course is ideal for anyone working or wanting to work in areas that improve population health and health promotion. You could come from fields in Health and Social Care, Sport and Exercise Science, Nursing/Midwifery, and Public Health.

Teaching and assessment

Our MSc Public Health Promotion course features five key modules.

You will develop an advanced understanding of the foundational constructs of health improvement, whilst analysing the social determinants and inequalities of health. The complex nature of behaviour, its influences and how practitioners can effect change will be judged as well as the principles, models and concepts adopted as part of Health Improvement.

You will also be introduced to key topics associated with ageing, including patterns and trends, beliefs and perceptions, culture, theoretical frameworks, health and social care provision, social inequalities and economic security in older life.

You will go on to study the mechanisms by which lifestyle, in particular physical activity and nutrition, can be promoted in order to improve health. You will also examine the notions of health crisis, health disadvantage and health advantage in cities. You will do this by utilising reference material from cities across the country and globally to understand the significance for health and healthcare.
