Course Summary

This interdisciplinary programme equips practitioners with the depth of insight necessary to working in the best interests of children and young people. The programme offers new ways of thinking about the position of children and young people in society and creates a critical bridge between theoretical perspectives, policy and practice. This course may be of particular interest to those working with/for children and graduates of childhood studies, health, social policy and education who wish to deepen their knowledge and child-centred research expertise.

Modules

This module will consolidate students? understanding of vulnerability, risk of harm, and offending behaviour. It will review the evidence on the role of adverse childhood experiences on offending behaviour in young people and adults. It will discuss the overlap between vulnerable young people at risk of harm through grooming for sexual and criminal exploitation, gang membership, and radicalisation, and young people who offend. The module will consider young people?s experiences of care, family trauma, specific learning needs and mental health issues.

Entry requirements

Applicants should:

hold a first degree, min 2ii, in a related subject (e.g. childhood and youth studies, social sciences, psychology, law or education) OR

hold a first degree, min 2ii in an unrelated subject, plus at least two years professional experience of work with children and/or young people OR

as mature applicants without a degree, have at least two years professional experience of work with children and/or young people.
