Course Summary

The Commercial Law programme is a research-led course focusing on the law governing private economic relations and businesses, which combines theoretical analysis with practice-oriented approaches to commercial law.

Throughout the programme, particular emphasis is placed on interdisciplinarity and on the international dimension of commercial law. Instead of offering a purely black-letter analysis, the programme is designed to give students the necessary tools to critically understand the social relevance of the law of market relations as well as to equip them with more practical knowledge of this highly important area of the law.

Graduates can pursue career paths in the legal profession, government, the private sector, and research or journalism. Possible professions include:

chartered legal executive

licensed conveyancer

human resources officer

patent attorney.

This module focuses on the relationship between commercial law, market regulation and society. It addresses the evolution of commercial law placing it in its socio-economic and historical context from a comparative and international viewpoint. It introduces and critically appraises the interaction between private autonomy and market regulation, the role of legal certainty and market efficiency in the regulation of private economic relationships, and the different theories of market regulation. The module will give you a critical theoretical understanding of commercial law and of the role that it plays in our society.
