Course Summary

This new inter-disciplinary course is designed to suit the progression and career development of scientists, radiographers, medical physicists, engineers and medical students wishing to intercalate and prepare for a career in radiology.

Medical Imaging with Management at BU

The Department of Medical Science & Public Health provides a focus for work and research into medical imaging with our Institute of Medical Imaging and Visualisation (IMIV) and works to ensure BU’s educational provision aligns with the needs of the local community, the NHS and industry, as well as current global medical imaging workforce demands. This cross-faculty course also incorporates the expertise in organisational business management from BU’s Business School.

Careers

Upon completion of this course, you will possess the advanced scientific and leadership knowledge and the necessary skillset mix and competencies required to improve your current radiographic practice, leadership/managerial roles within radiology departments or progress into careers in industry as an application/education/sales specialist manager for imaging device manufacturing companies like Siemens, General Electric Co, Philips, Agfa, Toshiba, Hitachi etc. Finally, the knowledge and research skills developed is an excellent preparation for further study at the doctoral level.

Modules

Medical imaging and therapeutic departments are advancing at a very fast pace in terms of technology and clinical need. Within this context, an appreciation of the technical and clinical principles required for efficient service delivery is important. You?ll learn the physical principles, specific imaging techniques, basic imaging anatomy and recognition of common clinical abnormalities when using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques. The unit will also help you to critically explore clinical, research and technological advancements as well as critique future developments in the field of MRI practice.

Entry requirements

Students need to have a bachelors Honours degree with at least 2:2 in a required subject, or equivalent. Appropriate professional qualifications with significant work experience would be considered e.g. Diploma of the college of radiographers. Required subject: Radiography, medical physics/engineering/medicine, biomedical/biological/physical sciences. Other healthcare professionals will also be considered.
