Our course in Sound Design for Film, TV and Interactive Media offers a stimulating programme with a unique blend of creative practice and skills development alongside as academic study.

We know that lives are busy, so we designed the course to be taught through a combination of intensive in-person sessions, online interactive and self-directed learning, as well as group and individual tutorials.

Our course is unique in that it is delivered alongside multiple degree routes in the broader Creative and Cultural Industries subject areas, which enables you to have a multi and interdisciplinary learning experience, and meet and collaborate with a range of creative professionals, including filmmakers, musicians and composers.

Why study Sound Design for Film, TV and Interactive Media?

Sound is essential element of all contemporary media, from television and film to games and online. These industries play key cultural and economic roles both within the UK and worldwide, and are important providers of employment. But these sectors are also characterised by fast-paced changes, to which individuals and organisations constantly need to adapt. Our programme will equip you with highly employable skills and an advanced knowledge base that will enable you to navigate this environment both as an individual and in your professional roles.

The course is taught by a team of experienced educators who have had professional careers in a related sector and/or are internationally recognised researchers in the field. A group of non-academic partners and advisors also contribute to the delivery of the programme, in the forms of visiting talks, debates and discussions, contributing to assignment briefs, and offering networking opportunities. Many of our partners have significant experience as sound production professionals.

As a student on the MA in Sound Design for Film, TV and interactive media programme, you will have access to sound recording studios and film production and post production facilities, including Avid Media Composer and Pro Tools sound editing and mixing software.

How you’ll be assessed

Throughout the course your knowledge and skills will be informally assessed through a variety of learning activities. You will be encouraged to engage in self-assessment and may be actively involved in peer assessment.

Formally, the course is assessed solely through coursework, including portfolio work, reports, essays and presentations.

Your future career

Graduates of this course will be able to pursue career in sound production and post-production in the film and TV sector, or in sound for games and online media. Candidates who are already in the workplace will benefit from using their new-found qualification and confidence to progress their careers with their current employer, or to use it to secure promotions or new employment elsewhere. They can also use the qualification as a way to improve what they are undertaking within their current role.

Modules

You will study advanced creative practices in sound design for film, TV and interactive media.?The skills of?location?sound recording and studio sound recording will form the foundation for further work on sound design. The focus in the early part of the module will be on production sound and recording dialogue. Subsequently, you will?learn the professional and creative practices associated with postproduction sound, including automated dialogue replacement (ADR) and Foley. This experience will then provide the foundation for work on sound editing and mixing, focusing in particular on?surround?sound design. These elements of the craft will be taught through the completion of short practical exercises.?
