The course will give you the skills and confidence you need to become an effective teacher. This course is aimed at graduates either currently in/or seeking to pursue a career in the wider education sector, and it has been informed by the most recent developments in educational research and government policy. You will analyse the many changes currently affecting the further education sector and will develop your knowledge of various teaching approaches and techniques to become a skilled and reflective teacher.
This course focuses on developing your teaching skills and knowledge on the subject you intend to teach. For this reason, you are expected to have a good understanding of your chosen subject(s) before you start training. PGCE Young People and Adult Specialists is a Level 7 (Masters Level) programme.
With the support from tutor module specialists from a range of sectors across the industry you will receive real life examples and industry contact including workshops and placements to help you understand the complex, ever-changing and exciting world of teaching. We pride ourselves on the personalised lessons and seminars where smaller classes enable students to have more interaction and support from tutors to help maximise potential.

Carlisle College has strong links with local education providers and as part of our work ready guarantee you will complete a 100 hour work placement which will build and support your expertise and future career aspirations. Some modules will offer the opportunity to engage in live research projects that will create networking opportunities and enrich your employability skills needed. You will also receive guidance in professional membership bodies relevant to the sector.
Who the Course is for?
This course is aimed at graduates either currently in/or seeking to pursue a career in the wider education sector. This is a Level 7 (Masters Level) course validated by NCG and is mapped to professional standards for the sector. From 2007 all new entrants to teaching and training in further and adult education must meet these standards in order to apply for QTLS (Qualified Teacher Learning Skills Sector).
This course fully meets the future requirements for Initial Teacher Training for the post compulsory sector and leads to achievement of QTLS. Candidates with QTLS have parity of esteem with holders of secondary QTS. Graduates can also use credits gained to progress onto the NCG Master’s degree in Education.

Progression Opportunities
This course comprises units which attract Credit Accumulation and Transfer (CATS) points. These can help successful students progress to a MA degree in education. 40 credits at Level 7 can be taken towards the Master’s degree in Education and Professional Development at the School of Education, NCUC.

You must hold a good degree level qualification in the subject area you wish to teach and meet the required standards for language, literacy, numeracy and ICT. These areas will be assessed through your application for the programme, and as part of your induction. You must also have at least 100 hours of teaching practice over the duration of the course and you will also need support from a mentor who may be expected to carry out teaching observations with support from the School of Education.
