Key informationHow we produce, process, transport, market and consume food affects us all profoundly as individuals, communities and on a global level. On this unique master’s programme, you will explore the interconnections within our food system and the importance of integrated food policy in meeting wider health, economic and environmental goals.Benefits of this courseYou will learn about designing and developing integrated food policies that are environmentally and economically sustainable, as well as supporting healthy diets and promoting social cohesion.You will question assumptions and analyse conflicting narratives around the challenges within the food system and the best ways to resolve them.The programme is structured around five modules:Food and public policyFood, culture and societyThe political economy of foodJoined-up approaches to food policyDissertation.Who is this course for?If you are passionate about food policy and addressing the inequities in our systems of production and distribution, then this programme is for you.Our students come from all over the world and from a wide range of professional backgrounds, creating a diverse learning environment with an international outlook.Teaching and assessmentYou will learn through a lively mixture of lectures, small group activities, class discussions, workshops and independent study.With the support of module leaders, you will have plenty of scope to determine topics for your written assessments ahead of deciding on your final dissertation subject, which you will work on with a personal supervisor.Our approach is truly interdisciplinary, and your studies will draw on social sciences including politics, sociology, economics, anthropology and psychology as well as health sciences.Our academic staff are active in research and policy-making at national and international levels, and their teaching reflects the latest debates and developments.The course is flexible to fit in with your other commitments, so you can study either in-person or online full-time over one year or part-time over two years.

Modules

You will undertake a piece of research and apply your theoretical understandings to an area of personal or professional interest. You will develop your skills as an independent and critical learner in an area of food policy or nutrition policy.

Entry requirements

Students will normally have a first or upper second-class honours degree in a relevant discipline, which is equivalent to a minimum United States Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.33. However, applications from students with significant professional experience in a related field of employment, volunteering or research will be considered.
