MSc - Master of Science
Social Policy / Administration
How we produce, process, transport, market and consume food affects us all profoundly as individuals, communities and on a global level. On this unique masters programme, you will explore the interconnections within our food system and the importance of integrated food policy in meeting wider health, economic and environmental goals.
You will learn about designing and developing integrated food policies that are environmentally and economically sustainable, as well as supporting healthy diets and promoting social cohesion.
You will question assumptions and analyse conflicting narratives around the challenges within the food system and the best ways to resolve them.
The programme is structured around five modules:
If you are passionate about food policy and addressing the inequities in our systems of production and distribution, then this programme is for you.
Our students come from all over the world and from a wide range of professional backgrounds, creating a diverse learning environment with an international outlook.
You will learn through a lively mixture of lectures, small group activities, class discussions, workshops and independent study.
With the support of module leaders, you will have plenty of scope to determine topics for your written assessments ahead of deciding on your final dissertation subject, which you will work on with a personal supervisor.
Our approach is truly interdisciplinary, and your studies will draw on social sciences including politics, sociology, economics, anthropology and psychology as well as health sciences.
Our academic staff are active in research and policy-making at national and international levels, and their teaching reflects the latest debates and developments.
The course is flexible to fit in with your other commitments, so you can study either in-person or online full-time over one year or part-time over two years.
This module provides an investigation of key dimensions of food policy. You will look at the scope of food policy as an academic subject asking whether and for whom food is a public policy issue.
You will identify the key theories and models used to explain food choice and consumption, in the context of the wider dynamics of the food system. The content draws on research from the social sciences, epidemiology and anthropology.
The module aims to enable you to interpret the complexity of the interactions between political activity and the structures of the food economy at local, regional, national and international levels.
This module seeks to integrate food policy and the environment. There are interlocking themes ecological public health; the nature of transitions reshaping diet, health and environment; diets; environmental impacts of the food system; policy responses and experimentation.
You will undertake a piece of research and apply your theoretical understandings to an area of personal or professional interest. You will develop your skills as an independent and critical learner in an area of food policy or nutrition policy.
