Course Summary

Exotic pets often fill veterinary surgeons with dread as they come through the surgery door. This programme will leave you fully equipped to understand and treat the more varied cases and species. The programme includes taught sessions on all key areas and promises to bring you fully up to date with all of the current and emerging issues. The modules will assist delegates in consolidating their knowledge of exotic medicine and surgery and help them develop an informed clinical approach to the exotic patient.

Modules

Key learning objectives: Explain how various legislation relates to the pharmacy and have a knowledge of the Medicines Act 1968, the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the COSHH regulations 2002; Revise the correct storage, dispensing and labelling of medicines; Understand the pharmacokinetics, potential interactions and adverse effects of common therapeutic agents including anaesthetics, anti-inflammatories, analgesics, anti- microbials and anti-parasitics; Describe what immunisation options exist for exotic patients; Delivery of drugs to exotic pets and zoo animals.

Entry requirements

All applicants must: hold a veterinary qualification, have spent a minimum of one year in veterinary practice, be on the RCVS Home Practising Register (UK-based applicants), hold a qualification that would entitle them to register as a member of the RCVS (applicants based outside the UK).
