Course Summary

International law is an increasingly important field of study and practice. The LLM in International, Commercial and Business Law will provide you with a strong theoretical and practical understanding of international legal processes and institutions, combined with specialist knowledge of the laws governing international business, commerce and trade. In an increasingly globalised economy, almost all businesses operate internationally. Trade, investment and finance cut across national boundaries and are governed by a complex web of transnational laws and regulations. As a result, the demand for professionals with a rich understanding of how law and business operate at a global level continues to grow. This LLM in International, Commercial and Business Law offers students with undergraduate qualifications in Law or Business the opportunity for advanced study in both disciplines and prepares them for the challenges of advising companies, governments and other institutions on issues such as the regulation of international trade, foreign investors' rights, and international litigation.

Keele Law School has a long tradition of academic expertise in the field of international law. International law has been taught at Keele by world-renowned experts such as Michael Akehurst and Patrick Thornberry. In recent years, Keele Law School has invested heavily in the area of international law. You will be taught by dynamic academic staff with a wide range of expertise and research interests. Keele is also a pioneer and leader in cross-disciplinary education. You will take modules in both the Law School and the Business School. You may also have the opportunity to study modern languages as part of your degree. This will increase your range of professional skills. Keele currently offers courses in: Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian and Spanish. The LLM includes a study trip to Geneva where you can visit international institutions such as the UN, the International Labour Organization, and the World Trade Organization.

The LLM in International Commercial and Business Law is a gateway to a range of careers and employment opportunities in the private and public sector. These include careers in: transnational law firms, multinational corporations, auditing firms and relevant national and international agencies (WTO; UN bodies; government; NGOs etc). Equally, the programme will equip students for further study in the form of a postgraduate research programme, such as a PhD, by providing appropriate research training and an introduction to key thinkers and scholarship.

This module provides a general overview of the nature of international law as a legal system, its subjects, sources and general principles, as well as an introduction to more specific themes such as the law governing the use of force, sovereign immunities or the settlement of international disputes.
