Phd projects are available across a range of areas, including Artificial Intelligence, Human-Centred Computing, Theoretical Computer Science and Future Systems. Artificial intelligence: Our researchers have extensive experience in the design, analysis and application of AI and machine learning algorithms. This includes algorithms for smart energy brokering, anomaly detection, AI applications in patient care and cancer diagnosis, and the analysis of AI implementations including federated learning. Human-centred computing: In our human-computer interaction (HCI) research we design, implement and evaluate interactive software and systems including smartphone apps, wearables, IoT (Internet of Things) devices, and virtual and augmented reality systems. Our interests span interaction methods and the design and evaluation of systems, and encompass applications in e-learning, digital health and digital heritage. Computer Science research: Our community of academic staff, PhD and postdoctoral researchers conduct internationally significant and impactful research relevant to AI, human-centred computing, future systems and theoretical computer science. This research includes significant specialisms in machine learning, responsible AI and evolutionary computation; interaction, vision and digital health research; and biological systems, smart energy, sustainability and cyber security. Future systems: We work in key areas pioneering the design, evaluation and modelling of smart, sustainable and secure systems.
