You’ll be able to choose from the widest range of modules from the medieval to the contemporary and covering film, literature, visual arts, drama, philosophy, cultural memory and history.

Prior study in Modern Languages is not a prerequisite for the course, but familiarity with analysing and writing about cultural representation would be beneficial.

Description

MA Modern Languages, Literature & Culture is a one-year course (two-years part-time) which combines the research strengths and subject specialisms of the three modern languages departments at King’s College London: French; German; and Spanish, Portuguese & Latin American Studies. In addition to the core dissertation and compulsory module on research methodologies and critical theory, you may choose from options on subjects from the Middle Ages to the present day.

The course offers you the flexibility to focus on one or more of the cultures of the French, German, Portuguese and Spanish-speaking worlds.

Career prospects:

Some of our students go on to research in our Department or at other institutions. Others have gone on to excel in a diverse range of careers such as teaching, journalism, cultural management, politics and world of finance.

Modules

This module is the second compulsory course for students taking the MA in Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures. It offers a unique opportunity to engage with the theory and practice of cultural translation, and to engage in active research projects. In cultural translation, any translation act involves the translator in a sophisticated process of understanding the process of movement of the translated artifact from source to target. This involves the nuanced analysis of the multiplicity of the process and invites inter-disciplinary engagement.
