MSc International Project Management

The module develops functional knowledge and critical understanding of key perspectives on human behaviour in the workplace. It focuses on processes of organising, leading, planning and managing human activity, in business settings. The module considers core organisational HRM policy and practice.

This module equips students with the knowledge and skills to lead organisations with purpose, aligning leadership strategies with organisational values, ethics, and societal impact. Through theory and practice, students will understand how to mobilize teams towards meaningful and sustainable goals.

The module provides an overview of international marketing strategies and practices, that businesses face when operating in the global marketplace. Students will learn to develop, implement, and manage marketing strategies related to international trade, cultural differences, and global market trends.

In today’s fast-changing global business environment, organisations face immense pressure to adapt, innovate, and compete. With multinational companies managing projects in several countries simultaneously, the complexities of international project delivery demand project managers who can navigate diverse cultural and geographical challenges effectively. Success in such contexts requires a profound understanding of how to align projects with organisational strategies while addressing the unique demands of international environments. The ability to deliver impactful results has become critical for ensuring organisational survival and competitiveness. This module is designed to develop students’ critical thinking and decision-making abilities by exploring the strategic and project management approaches needed for success in varying cultural and national contexts. By focusing on these essential skills, students will be well-equipped to manage the complexities of international projects in a dynamic, globalised world.

This module provides a comprehensive overview of project management for managing diverse and complex projects. Students will learn tools and techniques for predictive and adaptive projects, emphasising strategic alignment with organisational goals. Key topics include project design, planning, budgeting, international financial and contractual management, and quality and change control. The module covers linear, iterative, and evolutionary project lifecycles, alongside core techniques such as resource scheduling, critical path analysis, and benefits management. Students will gain skills in risk management, change control, and progress tracking to handle challenges effectively. By the end, they will be equipped to lead global, multi-disciplinary projects confidently.

This module focuses on equipping students with practical skills and theoretical knowledge essential for managing digital transformation projects effectively in modern organisational settings. It emphasises the critical role of technology and IT in contemporary project management, exploring emerging technologies and essential IT competencies. Students will gain insights into how these tools can be applied to enhance project outcomes in today’s dynamic, technology-driven environments. Hands-on experience is a core component, enabling students to utilize advanced computing technologies such as data analysis, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital collaboration tools. These technologies are integrated into project planning, execution, and monitoring processes to streamline workflows and improve project performance. By providing a robust framework of tools and techniques, this module prepares students to address the complexities of digital transformation, empowering them to leverage technology for innovation and successful project delivery in a fast-paced and dynamic business world.

Drawing upon the skills and knowledge developed in the first two semesters, students will complete either a Consultancy Project or a Research Dissertation. Preparation for the Project starts at the outset of the programme, during the induction activities. Students will be expected to draw on their own work experience and, if possible, their own relationships with employers or former employers to discuss and develop their Research Projects. While they are studying during the second semester, they develop their proposal further in discussion with tutors, and they also study the compulsory Research Methods course. In doing so, students will study specific research articles and case studies (including from an international context) to critique and analyse, which will influence and help shape their own approach to the dissertation or consultancy project. This will include the collection from both primary and secondary data sources and the application of both qualitative and quantitative (and mixed) methodologies.
