Oceanic internal waves are a fascinating phenomenon commonly observed in coastal regions. The ocean is a continuous density stratified fluid for which there are infinitely many modes of propagation. However, over 90 percentage of the kinetic energy associated with internal solitary waves (ISWs) is contained within the first two baroclinic modes (mode-1 and mode-2).
Although mode-1 waves have been studied extensively, results for mode-2 waves are limited. The goal of the project is to uncover a mathematical and physical description of mode-2 ISWs and to ultimately enhance our understanding of these waves within our oceans and other stably stratified fluids.
