Course Summary

Overview

From driverless cars to voice recognition, Artificial Intelligence (AI), is progressing at a rapid rate and has become part of our everyday lives. With the research and development of new technologies, AI is fast becoming an essential part of how businesses and institutions operate. It is also becoming a vital part of the Industry 4.0 vision with the government estimating that AI could contribute £232bn to the UK economy by 2030.

On our MSc Artificial Intelligence course, you’ll be taught by academics who are experts in the area, many of whom are currently conducting research into the subject as part of our Centre for Advanced Computational Science research group. This ensures that our curriculum is based on research-informed content at the leading edge of this fast-paced field.

This masters course will build on your existing computing knowledge. We aim to equip you with the fundamental principles of AI to be able to critically evaluate the theories, techniques, tools and systems used in the field. And the interdisciplinary applications, allowing you to specialise in this exciting, developing area.

You’ll also complete an in-depth masters project with the support of our academic and technical team. By the time you complete our postgraduate degree in AI, you’ll be well placed to succeed in this high growth industry and ready to tackle the challenges facing businesses.

CAREER PROSPECTS

The advanced skills and understanding you’ll develop on our MSc Artificial Intelligence course can take you into a range of exciting roles in different industries.

You’ll be ideally placed to apply for specialist jobs such as AI/Machine Learning Software Engineer and AI Data Specialist. There are many links to the field of data science for even broader opportunities. As AI spreads into wider sectors, you’ll find opportunities in areas such as medicine, transport, economics and more. There is also the opportunity to pursue academic research via MPhil or PhD positions.

Careers support is available from the moment you join us, throughout your time here, and for up to three years after the completion of your course. We have a range of services available through the Department of Computing and Mathematics and the University Careers Service including dedicated careers and employability advisors.

Modules

In conjunction with a member of academic staff, you will undertake an individual research project. While the project must be related to your degree, you may choose or invent the precise topic yourself. As part of the research, you will be expected to design, implement and evaluate a substantial piece of software, which will embody the research question of your topic. You will document the research by writing a dissertation, covering the background of your topic, the approach you have adopted and its relation to previous work, the results you obtained and the conclusions which can be drawn from them.
