These negotiated professional practice work-based learning programmes are purposely flexible and are designed to be responsive to the changing work force development needs of the health, social care and education sectors and to the professional development needs of individual practitioners.
Why study MA/MSc/PGCert Advanced Professional Practice (Negotiated Specialism) at Middlesex University?
This is a flexible, work based route to gaining a postgraduate qualification in a particular area of professional practice, that can be customised to meet your needs and those of your workplace. It is ideal for those who have completed previous accredited activity/qualifications/CPD as well as for those who have significant prior experience of work in the health, social care and education sectors.
You will be supported to reflect and build upon your prior experience and experiential learning to develop advanced situated knowledge based around your workplace context. You will develop your advanced practitioner inquiry, leadership and project skills to develop your own practice and practice in your organisation. You will also be able to design and lead a work based project that has the potential to transform your own practice and that of others.
What will you study on MA/MSc/PGCert Advanced Professional Practice (Negotiated Specialism)?
During the course of this programme, you will develop your knowledge and critical understanding of a range of theoretical concepts and practice knowledge that can be applied to give new insight to real work contexts and complex issues. You will study ethical principles, values and codes of practice and explore how these can be critically applied to your practice and that of others. You will also explore the influence of current policy, organisational context, quality imperatives and workplace priorities on practice development. You will also look into relevant methodologies and improvement strategies for developing practice/service in health, social care and education settings.
What will you gain?
On completion of this programme, you will be able to effectively engage, network and communicate with relevant stakeholders and academic audiences, and take responsibility and leadership for practice/service development initiatives. You will understand how to critically evaluate practice or organisational issues and apply creative problem solving techniques, advanced inquiry and action planning. You will have the ability to systematically design, undertake and manage a work based project that has the potential to transform your own practice and that of others. Finally, you will learn to critically reflect and evaluate your own practice and systematically plan professional development. Students can progress into the MA after successful completion of the PgCert.

Entrants will be experienced practitioners and currently working in health, social care or education settings. You will usually be expected to have a first degree or be able to demonstrate ability to study at post degree level through previous study or CPD at level 6 or 7. As this is a progression programme, you will be expected to have: Credits from previous modules at level 6/7 that are relevant to the area of professional practice and negotiated specialism (up to 30 credits can be used from level 6. Credits from a previous completed Masters or Batchelor’s cannot be re-used) And / or at least 5 years experience as a (senior) practitioner relevant to the area of professional practice and negotiated specialism that could be considered and may be recognised through RPL processes. For PGCert:Entrants will be experienced practitioners with relevant experience and currently working in health, social care or education settings, usually with a first degree (post qualifying). At least 30 credits at level 7, from relevant accredited activity, gained in the last 5 years (or able to evidence currency) And/or at least 3 years experience as a practitioner relevant to the area of professional practice and negotiated specialism that could be considered and may be accredited at level 7 through RPL processes.
