Newcastle University has a world-class reputation and renowned experts in the field of dentistry. With our new facilities, we are well placed to offer dentistry and dental research opportunities of the highest standard.

Our Dentistry and Dental Sciences MPhil and PhD are based within the Faculty of Medical Sciences.

The programme is delivered in:

  • the School of Dental Sciences
  • the relevant Research Institutes for: Biosciences, Translational and Clinical Research and Population Health Sciences.

If your research involves clinical components there may be a partnership with the NHS.

The School of Dental Sciences and COHR

You'll spend most of your time within the School of Dental Sciences and the COHR. You'll work within research teams. These are led by experts in their field in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.

We combine world-class clinical and research facilities with an open environment. Here you'll find scholars, clinicians and researchers working side-by-side. Our focus is on multidisciplinary translational research. We focus on work that is relevant to real life.

COHR has a particular focus on understanding molecular and cellular mechanisms. The aim is to translate these into clinical settings. Evaluation of clinical, community and economic strategies to improve public health and inform a wider health agenda is a central research theme. Within COHR there is a Collaborating Centre for the World Health Organization for Nutrition and Oral Health. Research projects align to the Centre's main research themes:

  • Translational oral biosciences
  • Oral healthcare and epidemiology
  • Dental education

COHR is involved in many industrial collaborations. We also work together with the Newcastle Clinical Trials Unit. With them, we provide planning and implementation of clinical trials in oral health.
