The School of Medicine and Dentistry was placed within the top seven UK institutions in all Units of Assessment – Clinical Medicine Public Health, Health Services and Primary Care and Allied Health Professions, Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmacy- during REF 2014.
The Wolfson Institute of Population Health captures scientific opportunities to explore the causes of poor health and health inequalities, how to detect disease earlier, and design novel interventions and evaluate measures aimed at improving the health and quality of life of individuals and populations, locally in East London, nationally, and across the globe. Research focuses on multimorbidity, complexity, and common and chronic diseases, including respiratory diseases, cardiovascular disease, cancer, mental disorders, and neurologic diseases. The Institute is also known for its expertise in developing and applying methods for evaluating the effects of public health and clinical interventions. The Institute’s research spans action to influence the social determinants of health, change individual lifestyle factors such as tobacco use and diet, improve the early detection of disease, as well as ways to improve the effectiveness and quality of health services with a focus on primary care.
The Institute has over 250 staff and over 70 PhD students, whose research within and across conditions and disciplines to generate the evidence to implement health system change, improve population health, and nurture social equity. Our five Centres are home to interdisciplinary staff including clinicians epidemiologists health service researchers qualitative researchers psychologists ethnographers behavioural scientists statisticians health economists policy researchers and trial managers. All of our centres are involved in statistical research, covering a wide range of methodologies and applications. These will include epidemiology, demography, clinical trials, longitudinal studies, health screening, infection control, birth weight and gestation, systematic reviews, cluster randomisation, meta-analysis, logistic regression, survival analysis, multi-level modeling, and models of disease progression.
