The programme draws on our established teaching and research expertise in IT law, e-commerce law, telecommunications law, computer law and media law. You will examine the complex issues concerning national and international law, while exploring current and developing policies. You’ll learn to identify gaps, conflicts and compliance issues and develop expertise in the legal regimes governing the supply and use of technology, media and telecommunications.

Assessment

In your taught online modules you will be assessed by coursework: tasks (30%) plus final essay (70%), or tasks (30%) plus final assessment exercise (70%). Research paper: optional attendence at the residential weekend (presentation and 5,000 word essay).

You will undertake more self-directed work in completing your dissertation.

Modules

The aim of the course is to educate you in the law and regulation of banking and financial services with specific relevance to their provision online. It examines the law relating to online payment services and online investment, the consumer protection issues and regulation of advertising, the authorisation and supervision of online financial activities and the legal issues of cross-border provision of financial services. It looks at the regulation of payment systems and electronic money issuers (Payment Services Directive, E-money Directives) and the policy issues underlying this regulation (prudential supervision vs flexibility and innovation in high-technology markets). The module examines country of origin regulation and its implications for e-financial services in the EU Internal Market.

Degree requirements: A 2:1 or above at undergraduate level in Law or a degree with substantial law content. Other routes: Equivalent professional qualifications and experience are considered on an individual basis.
