Course Summary

About the Course

Regents Theological College Postgraduate Certificate in Applied Theology provides an introduction to postgraduate study that allows you to focus immediately on modules directly relevant to your vocational and professional development. For those seeking an initial postgraduate University accredited qualification, the two year part-time study programme offers an achievable route for professional development. Whether you wish to enhance your skills and knowledge in relation to chaplaincy, Christian leadership or another of the available subject areas, the modules seek to foster depth of biblical insight and (self-) critical theological reflection on a wide variety of relevant topics, challenging your preconceptions and constructively resourcing your independent and original contributions to the issues explored.

Educational Aims of the Programme

  • To offer a postgraduate degree programme in Applied Theology in full-time or part-time study mode
  • To provide access to postgraduate level study that fulfils requirements for continuing professional development with specific vocational fields, such as chaplaincy or church leadership
  • To foster critical and innovative research linked to personal and professional development in one or more key areas for Pentecostal-Charismatic movements in: Biblical Theology, Pentecostal Studies, Discipleship and Mission, Christian Leadership, and Chaplaincy
  • To develop systematic conceptual understanding in Applied Theology through critical engagement with current research problems and advanced scholarship, leading to original and creative contributions to the field
  • To encourage students to act autonomously in planning and implementing a negotiated study, demonstrating both critical selection and evaluation of a comprehensive range of resources at the forefront of current scholarship, including major publications, refereed research articles and primary sources.

Mode of Learning

Regents course can be completed in 1 year of full-time study, or (normally) over 2 year’s part-time study.

Awards

Successful completion of the PG Certificate in Applied Theology requires that students obtain a total of 60 credits, comprising two 30 credit modules. Each of the available modules is valued at 30 credits. Most students are currently part-time and therefore usually take one module per year over two years.

Students who enrol on this programme are not able to extend their studies to diploma or MA level by transferring their module credits onto the MA in Applied Theology programme.

Modules

The module begins by surveying recent trends in Pentecostal Theology as found primarily in Western academic and ecclesial contexts. Subsequently, challenging issues currently facing Pentecostal Theology are explored in relation to three foci: Church, World, and Academy. The section on Church explores ecclesiology and ecumenism, offering a critical analysis of current Pentecostal models for ecclesiology with regard to both their internal coherency and their implications for ecumenical engagement. The contribution of Pentecostal theology to ecumenical dialogue is also explored. The section on World explores pluralism and politics, critically evaluating recent Pentecostal responses to the challenges of pluralism in the West, including: involvement in interreligious dialogue and the construction of theology of religions; responses to secularism within Pentecostal political theology. The final section Academy explores rationalities and education, critically evaluating Pentecostal responses to issues such as: the cultural predominance of scientific rationality; the natural sciences and Pentecostal apologetics; Pentecostal fundamentalism as a reaction to scientific modernity; humanism, the ideal of progress and the purpose(s) of education. Critical reflection on the significance of Pentecostal theology’s engagement in the public sphere for the Pentecostal movement in the West is encouraged throughout.
