Course Summary

Offering a balance of broad-based study and specialist training, this MMus Music master’s course is designed to meet your needs as you develop your skills in composition, whether you wish to develop as a professional composer, or as a thorough grounding in advanced creative and collaborative skills that can be transferred across a wide range of careers.

You will come away well-versed and well-practiced in your chosen discipline of composition, verbally and technically fluent, fully conversant with a broad range of issues of concern in your field, and able to present your ideas across a wide range of media.

This degree is also available via the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) mode of study where students with ongoing professional careers take modules over a four or five-year period.

Please note that the ‘Composition’ pathway title is for study purposes only and won’t be reflected in your degree title upon graduating. You will graduate with MMus Music.

Modules

In this module you will carry out independent research providing specialist insights into a topic of your choice from the field of ethnomusicology, film studies, historical musicology, performance studies, or theory and analysis. You will look at digital sources, secondary literature, and archive material on your chosen theme, and critically engage with new thinking in musicology. You will be guided by a supervisor who will advise on the planning, organisation, development and presentation of your dissertation, which will be between 13,000 and 14,000 words in length.

Entry requirements

Normally, we require a UK 2:2 (Honours) or equivalent is required. Candidates with relevant professional qualifications in an associated area will also be considered. All international students are required to provide the following: An academic essay of 2500 words long on any musical topic. In addition to this ALL student must provide the following depending on their chosen pathway: Composition pathway: A composition portfolio is required; Performance pathway: A recording of performances is required; Musicology and ethnomusicology pathway: Submit an academic essay.
