Course Summary

Offered by the Centre for Creative Industries, Media and Screen Studies (CCIMSS), this programme is aimed at students who are interested in learning about the history, theory and practices of the cultural economy through a global lens.

Combining theoretical engagement with questions like the value of culture, the commodification of art and sustainability, diversity and precariarity in the cultural economy, with a focus on learning through making, that will enable students to undertake successful careers within the cultural economy.

Core and compulsory modules explore the history of debates over cultural value and the cultural market, with focused modules on the global film industry and the global music business. Students are encouraged to apply the theoretical perspectives they have learned to practice, to learn through making in skills-based courses in podcasting, sound recording, and curating.

The Directed Study in Industry module enables students to undertake work placements in relevant creative industries and/or to develop their own entrepreneurial projects. Access to the range of guided options in SOAS’s unique music, history of art and media modules means that students tailor their own course of study to suit their particular interests, skills and ambitions.

Modules

This core module presents a theoretical overview of approaches to the analysis of art, culture and media in the context of the economy. From late-19th century ideas of what art is for, to anxieties about the emergence of Mass and Popular culture in the mid-20th century, to approaches to The Culture Industry and The Cultural Industries, to the emergence of the idea of the Creative Industries at the end of the 20th Century, the module asks questions about how art is, or should be, funded, the economic importance of culture and how art and culture has been made, sold and understood in the globalized digital age. Drawing on a range of theoretical perspectives, from theories of Mass Culture to Cultural Studies, Cultural Sociology and the emergent disciple of Cultural Industries analysis, and case studies from across the world, the module places questions of value, cultural labour and cultural justice in global political context.
