COURSE OVERVIEW
Our Master’s degree in Advanced Practice in Health Care is designed for experienced healthcare practitioners who want to consolidate their skills and develop to an advanced level.
You will develop advanced assessment, diagnostic and disease management skills and have the opportunity to apply to carry out studies for non-medical prescribing.
Throughout your studies, you will refine critical research and analytical skills in relation to clinical practice and develop professional reflective practice techniques.
WHY ADVANCED PRACTICE IN HEALTH CARE AT SWANSEA?
The course is delivered through our School of Health and Social Care which sits within the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Science, thus, giving you the benefit of our extensive cross-disciplinary teaching and research expertise. According to the most recent Research Excellence Framework in 2014-2021, over 75% of research carried out at the college was of international or world-leading quality.
We offer two part time intakes per year, one in September and one in March. Please note the full-time route is only offered at Health Board request.
As practitioners working in clinical practice we constantly review the course to reflect the current needs of the health care community. Our academic team is made up of professionals who are active in their specialities including advanced practitioners and a medical practitioner. We work in partnership with local health boards and the Welsh Ambulance Service Trust in the selection of all applicants for this programme.
We have strong links with professional practice and academic research networks in Europe and around the world, so your learning is informed by the latest policy and practice developments.
YOUR ADVANCED PRACTICE IN HEALTH CARE EXPERIENCE
The MSc programme adopts a blended learning approach with a mixture of online learning and classroom-based learning at our St David’s Park campus in Carmarthen, with plenty of access to our state-of-the-art facilities at Singleton Park.
Our academic staff are active in a wide range of research fields, including public health, psychology, sociology, midwifery, and child nursing, offering an unrivalled mix of academic excellence and current policy and practice expertise.

Due to the nature of this MSc programme, there are specific requirements set by the Health Boards regards funding and applications for this MSc. For those applicants from: Swansea Bay Health Board - nursing applicants will need to speak to the lead nurse for education prior to applying to the University to assess suitability. Likewise, allied health applicants would need to speak to their respective education / professional leads. Please note that Swansea Bay Health Board do not support any applications from a health care registrant at band 5.; Hywel Dda Health Board – all applicants need to seek line manager approval and apply for higher awards funding prior applying to the University; Welsh Ambulance Service Trust – all applicants will need to speak to the advanced practice lead for their locality and apply for advanced practice funding within WAST; Other Health Boards – you would need to discuss and seek approval for the application from your line manager. You will also need to identify your funding avenue prior to application; Self-Funding Applicants – any applicant wishing to self-fund their studies will need to speak to the programme director for the MSc prior to application; Upon applying to the University, a decision will be made to offer an interview. Interviews are held jointly by the respected health boards and acceptance onto the course is made collaboratively between the University and Health Board. Self-funding applicants will be interviewed by the academic team.
