Course Summary

COURSE OVERVIEW

The MSc Computational Engineering benefits from the position of Swansea University at the forefront of international research in computational engineering.

This course harnesses the expertise of academic staff to provide you with world class postgraduate training.

Our globally renowned engineers pioneer the development of numerical techniques such as the finite element method, as well as computational procedures that help to solve complex engineering problems.

You will gain a practical understanding of computer modelling, and how it plays a critical role in engineering, science and emerging areas of interdisciplinary research.

Accredited by the JBM, this MSc also gives a comprehensive foundation in the finite element method in engineering mechanics.

Students will also achieve PgDip exit award during this course.

YOUR COMPUTATIONAL ENGINEERING EXPERIENCE

Over the course you will use mathematical modelling and computational methods to solve complex problems.

You will learn techniques that play an increasingly instrumental role in industry and understand how methodology can be applied to fields such as medicine and the life sciences.

Your studies will be based at the Zienkiewicz Centre for Computational Engineering, which has excellent computing facilities including a state-of-the-art multi-processor supercomputer, with virtual reality facilities and high-speed networking.

COMPUTATIONAL ENGINEERING EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Graduates of the Computational Engineering MSc are well placed for rewarding specialist opportunities.

Our career support services include:

  • Employability workshops, employers’ talks, bespoke events and careers fairs
  • Individual advice and guidance from professionally qualified Careers Advisers
  • Help with finding jobs, internships, work placements and volunteering opportunities
  • Access to information resources on a wide range of career management topics
  • Funding to support student internship opportunities and Student Society/Club events.

We also provide help and advice for Swansea University Alumni up to two years after you graduate.

Modules

The module aims to develop fundamental research skills. It comprises the development of supervised research work leading to a dissertation in the field of the Master's degree programme. The specific research topic will be chosen by the student following consultation with academic staff. On completion of this module, students should have the ability to: Investigate a research topic in detail; Formulate research aims; Devise and plan a research strategy to fulfil the aims; Carry out research work - undertake a literature search, a laboratory based or computer based investigation or a combination of these; Gather, organize and use evidence, data and information from a variety of primary and secondary sources; Critically analyse information; Make conclusions supported by the work and identify their relevance to the broader research area; Resolve or refine a research problem, with reasoned suggestions about how to improve future research efforts in the field; and produce a report (dissertation), with the findings presented in a well organised and reasoned manner.
