COURSE OVERVIEW

Welcome to Swansea University's Schools Partnership (PYPA), a new way for school and university staff to work together to ensure that 'Tomorrow's Teachers' have the skills and experience they need to make a difference to pupils in Wales.

Qualified English teachers are in high demand across the UK. PYPA has developed an innovative PGCE Secondary English program that will give confidence to those entering the teaching profession a better understanding of their subject and an understanding of how to teach it. This program will prepare you to make a positive contribution to the learning communities you join. PYPA's PGCE Secondary English program is complemented by regional, national and international research. You will learn how to make English meaningful, interesting and fun and also how to analyze your own and your pupils' development.

PYPA's rigorous and integrated PGCE program will challenge you both academically and professionally. The PGCE English program aims to develop a critical understanding of the nature of English and its place in the school curriculum. You will be encouraged to research and test your own approaches to English pedagogy to find those approaches that work best for you and the pupils you teach. PYPA is committed to developing research-led, reflective practitioners who can demonstrate creativity and flexibility in their teaching so that learners develop their subject qualification in an environment that is enjoyable.

Modules

This module is designed to enable student teachers to work towards the Professional Standards for Teaching and Leadership at QTS level by developing the appropriate subject knowledge, skills and attitudes identified in statutory requirements and non-statutory guidance. It will enable students to develop full understanding of the complexities of the role of the teacher as a professional from a regional, national and international perspective. They will understand the role of assessment in teaching and learning. It will explore key aspects of professional practice and develop the practical and reflective skills necessary to meet the needs of all pupils regardless of their cultural, linguistic, religious or socio-economic background and whether or not they have additional learning or other special needs thus ensuring equity of experience for all pupils. The students will learn about the Welsh Government's newly developed ALN Transformation Programme, which aims to transform expectations, experiences and outcomes for children and young people with additional learning needs. This module, EDPM02, incorporates Practice and Theory (PAT) and Research days. The PAT days combine pedagogic theory and practice, whilst the research days provide student teachers with the research literacy required to select, assess and apply research knowledge within their teaching. The school-based but jointly delivered PAT and research days will enable student teachers to link the research to issues to the reality of curriculum design and classroom practice. SUSE staff will lead on the theory and school staff will lead on the discussion and observation of the practical application of the theory. Within PAT, student teachers will develop an understanding of the complex influences of personal, social and cultural factors on teachers and learners.
