Course Summary

COURSE OVERVIEW

Our accredited Master’s degree in Social Work will equip you with the theoretical and practical knowledge to launch a rewarding career as a registered social worker.

You will study the ethics and values of social work, critical practice relating to the law around child and adult care, and the key theories and perspectives underpinning social work policy and practice.

You will spend half of your time on placement with social work agencies, learning through observation and practice, and the other half being taught on our Singleton Park campus.

Throughout your studies, you will refine critical research and analytical skills in relation to social work practice and policy, and develop professional reflective practice techniques.

Modules

The module provides the basis for understanding social work theories and perspectives for informing contemporary social work practice in a Welsh context. The module critically considers the concepts and explanations of social work theories and psychosocial perspectives from other disciplines that contribute to the social work knowledge base and its application to ethically-minded practice with service users and carers. The module curriculum will examine how knowledge from the social sciences, in particular sociological and psychological perspectives, has informed social work practice, both historically and in contemporary social care settings. Emphasis will be placed on practice in the Welsh context and the translation of theoretical perspectives to methods and tools in practice. Students will be encouraged to critically reflect on their own assumptions about the human condition and human relationships and to develop their own frameworks for practice based on the theories, perspectives and approaches discussed throughout the module.
